If you’re experiencing problems with your clutch, it’s important that you get it looked at as soon as possible. Your clutch is a vital component in the running of your vehicle and connected to your gears. If it’s not working properly and causing you problems it could be dangerous to drive on the roads.

Signs your cambelt needs replacing

The cambelt is in the middle of your engine and has teeth which help to grip and turn components. It is made of rubber and therefore can wear over time and eventually snap, causing your engine to break down. There are a number of signs that your cambelt has broken, the main one being that your car won’t start when you turn the ignition. A ticking noise, engine misfiring and oil leaks can also be signs that your cambelt is broken.

When it snaps, your engine will go out of sync and can cause serious damage if you don’t get it repaired quickly. Our trained technicians have years of experience replacing cambelts and know what to look out for if they suspect this is what is causing the problem. We’ll inspect your engine and if you need a cambelt replacement then we’ll be able to help you.

Common clutch problems

Your clutch, like most other components in your vehicle, is subject to wear and tear over time. Van and car manufacturers will provide a service schedule with a guide to when each vital component should be replaced in order to maximise the performance of your vehicle and avoid any breakdowns.

If you haven’t had regular servicing on your car or other factors have affected your clutch, such as improper use or an accident then it could mean that you experience problems with your clutch.

Signs that indicate clutch repairs are required

Your clutch feels spongy – if your clutch feels too soft it is an early sign that your clutch is failing. It could be a sign of a worn clutch and it might be close to needing a new one.

Clutch slipping – One of the most common issues that can occur with your clutch is that it can slip. If your car hesitates before accelerating it can mean that the clutch is not delivering enough drive to the wheels. Similarly, if the clutch disengages too quickly, it can be a sign of slipping.

Problem shifting gears – if you need extra effort to change gears, it can mean that there’s an issue with the clutch. If your car starts to shake then it could be a sign that your clutch is wearing. It’s more apparent in reverse or first gear.

Rattling or grinding – Your clutch isn’t one for being quiet when there’s an issue. Grinding or rattling noises coming from the clutch usually are an indication there’s a problem. Any clunking sounds that occur when you shift gears can be down to the transmission.

Burning smell – a burning smell can come from friction from a slipping clutch. This can be a sign that your clutch is failing and your clutch is seriously worn.
